What to Do With SSA-1099, RRB-1099-R, or RRB-1099

If you received Social Security benefits or railroad retirement benefits, then you may have been sent an SSA-1099, RRB-1099-R, or RRB-1099. You can add this to your eFile account to generate the needed forms as this may be taxable depending on your other income and information.

1. Sign in to eFile.com
Sign in to eFile.com or sign up here, then enter all your personal identifying information.
2. Where Do I Enter Data?
eFile will guide you through entering all of your information. Once under the income section, you will see Retirement. Here, read each question carefully and select "Yes" to the income and form that applies to you. Your choices will be:
Did you have Railroad Retirement Benefits reported to you on Form RRB-1099-R?
Did you have Social Security equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits reported to you on Form RRB-1099?
Did you have Social Security benefits reported to you on Form SSA-1099?
3. How to Manually Add Data
To manually add your form(s), navigate to Federal Taxes > Review > I'd like to see the forms I've filled out or search for a form and enter the applicable keyword for your form. For Social Security, enter "Social Security" or enter "RRB" to add railroad benefits. You can then fill out the details based on the form(s) you received.

Important boxes on your form:
3: Gross Social Security equivalent benefit of tier 1
4: Social Security equivalent benefit of tier 1 repaid to RRB
5: Net Social Security equivalent benefit portion of tier 1
6: Workers' compensation offset
7: Social Security equivalent benefit portion of tier 1 paid for one year prior
8: Social Security equivalent benefit portion of tier 1 paid for two years prior
9: Social Security equivalent benefit portion of tier 1 paid for three or more years prior
10: Federal income tax withheld
11: Medicare premium total
