Form 1040-X, 1040X Tax Amendment

Tax Year 2022 income tax returns were due by the April IRS tax deadline, however, they can still be efiled by the October deadline here on eFile.com. You can also prepare a 2022 Tax Amendment from your eFile.com account if you filed your 2022 IRS accepted return on eFile.com as well.

If you efiled your IRS accepted 2022 return on eFile.com, you can complete your federal amendment, but you can only mail it to the IRS—you cannot submit it electronically. See the additional options below (e.g. previous tax years, state taxes, Form 1040-X, etc.) for tax amendment instructions. See instructions for state tax amendments.

Select from one of the following options for 2022 and previous year tax amendment instructions:

1) Tax Amendment for eFile.com ONLY Taxpayers

This assumes that you have prepared and e-filed an IRS accepted 2022 Tax Return on eFile.com. Here are instructions to prepare a 2022 Tax Amendment only if you e-Filed a 2022 Tax Return via eFile.com. For all other tax years, visit this tax amendment page or read Section 2 below.

Step by Step Amendment Instructions for eFile.com Users

2) Tax Amendment Instructions for NON eFile.com Taxpayers

If you prepared your 2022 IRS Tax Return on a different site other than eFile.com, (H&R Block® or TurboTax®, etc.) you can still prepare your 2022 Tax Amendment here on eFile.com by following these step-by-step instructions:

  • Have a copy of your completed, IRS accepted, 2022 Tax Return on hand. You should be able to download this PDF file from the site where you filed your 2022 Return.
  • Create a free eFile.com account.
  • Enter your 2022 IRS Tax Return data on the eFile.com tax app. Enter your original data from your IRS accepted return with no changes at this point. Do not attempt to e-File this return as it would be rejected by the IRS as a duplicate. When done, compare the 2022 Tax Return results as shown by the 2022 Tax Return In Progress PDF file in "My Account" on eFile.com with the 2022 Tax Return PDF file you filed. Important: The 2022 Tax Return results have to be 100% identical in order to prepare your 2022 IRS Tax Amendment on eFile.com.
  • Once you have verified that both PDF files are identical, follow the steps as listed under STEP 1 on the amendment preparation page.

3) Tax Amendment Instructions for Previous Tax Years for all Taxpayers

You can load and complete Form 1040-X by visiting this searchable page of tax forms. On that page, search for the 1040-X and click on the Tax Amendment link to open the document.

Regardless of where you filed the tax year in question, the instructions for the amendment are the same for all taxpayers:

  • Have a copy of your tax return for the tax year in question at hand as it was accepted by the IRS. You should be able to download this PDF file from the site where you filed your tax return for the tax year in question.
  • Load the Form 1040-X into the eFile.com PDF Editor. You can either complete, sign, and download the form or download the form and complete it offline.
  • Load any other tax forms for the tax year in question here and correct the respective form or schedule.
  • When done, compare the new updated or changed tax forms with the associated forms and schedules of the associated tax year as filed with the IRS.
  • Mail your Form 1040-X and any associated forms or schedules to the IRS. Mailing addresses are below.
  • To prepare your state tax amendment, see amendment instructions by state by selecting your state.
  • See additional PDF based detailed instructions for Tax Amendment Form 1040-X.

You can check the status of your amended return on the IRS Amended Return Status tool by clicking the link below and clicking on What Is Your Federal Tax Return Amendment Status? You can also call the IRS amended return hotline at 1-866-464-2050.

Check Your IRS Tax Amendment Status

Note: The IRS "Where's My Refund" online tool does not keep track of amendment refunds.

If you are amending a return in order to get an additional tax refund, you can go ahead and cash or deposit any refund you get in the meantime. However, do not file your amended return until after you receive the refund. It generally takes the IRS 16 weeks (or 4 months) to process an amended return, so you should wait at least 10 weeks before checking on the status of your new amended tax refund. Once your amended return has been processed, you will receive any additional refund you are owed.

Refund From Amendment

If you are amending a return in order to get an additional tax refund, you can go ahead and cash or deposit any refund you get in the meantime. However, do not file your amended return until after you receive the refund. It generally takes the IRS 16 weeks (or 4 months) to process an amended return, so you should wait at least 10 weeks before checking on the status of your new amended tax refund. Once your amended return has been processed, you will receive any additional refund you are owed.

If it has been over 16 weeks (or 4 months) and you still have not received your amended refund check, you can find more information about your refund by calling the IRS amended return hotline at 1-866-464-2050.

We at eFile.com generally recommend waiting until after January 31 to e-file your returns. Why? This is the date that your various statement tax forms, such as your W-2 reporting income, are required to be sent. Be sure you have received all of your forms so you do not have to file an amendment—start tax planning now. Use this 2023 Tax Refund Calculator to estimate your 2023 taxes and get ready for next year.
